Medvedev smashes racket seven times in 6-0, 6-0 loss

Daniil Medvedev suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to wildcard Matteo Berrettini in the round of 32 at the Monte Carlo Masters on April 8, 2026. The former world No. 1 smashed his racket seven times in succession after falling behind 2-0 in the second set on the clay courts. He chased the racket across the court, striking it repeatedly as the crowd chanted in rhythm with each blow.

Medvedev tossed the shattered racket into a garbage can upon reaching his bench and received a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. The match lasted 49 minutes and marked his first professional double bagel loss, in which he failed to win a single game. It was Medvedev's first clay-court match of the season.

Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist from Italy, won just 17 points off Medvedev, who recorded five double faults and landed 36 percent of his first serves. "I wouldn’t expect to win like that and it doesn’t happen that often," Berrettini said. "It was definitely one of the best performances of my life."

Medvedev faces a likely substantial fine for the outburst, similar to penalties from last year's U.S. Open, where he paid $30,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct and $12,500 for racket abuse after a first-round exit.
