Former NFL cornerback Darrell Green, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008, is participating in trials for the U.S. men's flag football national team in Chula Vista, California.[1][2]

The 64-year-old Green qualified through USA Football's digital combine and is seeking an invitation to national team training camp next month, with a potential roster spot for the 2026 squad that will compete at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Bremen, Germany.[1][3]

USA Football senior director of high performance and national teams Callie Brownson noted Green's impressive testing results, stating: "He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive. Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look."[1]

Green played his entire 20-year NFL career with the Washington Redskins, selected 28th overall in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M-Kingsville. He recently had his No. 28 jersey retired by the Washington Commanders on October 20, 2024.[2][4]

Over his career, Green recorded 54 interceptions, six of which he returned for touchdowns. He was selected to seven Pro Bowls, earned first-team All-Pro honors once and won Super Bowls XXII and XXVI.[2][5]

The U.S. men's flag football team has won six of the seven IFAF World Championships contested since 2010.[1][6]

Approximately 100 male and female athletes are competing in the trials, including former WNBA player Loryn Goodwin and ex-Florida State quarterback O'Mariah Gordon.[1]

Flag football is set to debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.[7]
