White Sox announce Guillén No. 13 retirement on live broadcast
Chicago White Sox former manager Ozzie Guillén learned on a live broadcast during Friday's home opener that the team will retire his No. 13 uniform number. Host Chuck Garfien, Guillén and White Sox legend Scott Podsednik were on the CHSN telecast from Guaranteed Rate Field when Podsednik read the surprise announcement from an envelope heading into the bottom of the third inning. Guillén joked about a bobblehead before tearing up, hugging Podsednik and asking for his wife as fans chanted his name.
The team made the announcement over the stadium public address system. Guillén managed the White Sox to their 2005 World Series title over the Houston Astros, the franchise's first championship in 88 years. He has served as a team analyst since 2019 and played 13 seasons as a shortstop with Chicago.
Guillén becomes the 13th player in White Sox history to have his number retired and the first manager. The special ceremony honoring him is scheduled for Saturday, August 8.
